Well, well, well.
The State, the Columbia, S.C. daily newspaper, has an exclusive news bulletin reporting the full text of a few e-mails between Gov Sanford and his Argentine lover, a woman by the name of Maria.
The e-mails from Sanford are displayed as coming from "Gov Sanford" ( were they sent on his Governor's e-mail - what an IDIOT ! ) and -- get this -- the newspaper had these e-mails in DECEMBER . . . 6 months ago.
Brace yourself. This is Smoove B ( the fictional 'love columnist' from The Onion ) crossed with any 1970s AM radio love song balladeers with a dash of 19th-century British love poetry.
THIS is a stimulus package, baby !
Everything from meeting McCain in July, Veep rumors about himself, kisses, curves, 'two magnificent parts' and sex talk.
From Gov. Sanford,
Date: Thursday, July 10, 2008, 12:24 a.m.
. . . Will think about you on its streets and wish I was going to be there later in the month when you are there. Tomorrow night back to Philadelphia for the start of the National Governor's Conference through the weekend. . . . The following weekend have been asked to spend it out in Aspen, Colorado with McCain - which has kicked up the whole VP talk all over again in the press back home ...
Two, mutual feelings .... You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night’s light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...
. . . As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes ...
. . . In the meantime please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul."
And an e-mail to the Gov from Evita -- errr, Maria.
From Maria,

. . . You are my love ... something hard to believe even for myself as it's also a kind of impossible love, not only because of distance but situation. . . .

This brings us, almost of necessity, to the great Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber song --
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me Argentina...
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know that every word is true
